LACChain is a global alliance led by the Inter-American Development Bank's Innovation Lab (IDB Lab) focused on developing blockchain infrastructure and ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean. Launched in 2019, it operates as a public permissioned blockchain network that is EVM-compatible and implements several key technical standards including the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model and their own LAC1 DID Method Specification.
The technical infrastructure includes a DID Registry smart contract system that enables the creation, management and verification of decentralized identifiers. The LAC1 DID Method builds upon the did:ethr method while adding capabilities like backwards revocation time support and direct DID registry resolution. The system implements the EIP-712 and EIP-1812 standards for credential signatures and on-chain claims verification. Notable technical features include:
The platform is being adopted across Latin America, with partners including Red Hat, the Catholic University of Córdoba, and the University of Guadalajara. The alliance focuses on enabling compliant blockchain innovation for enterprises, governments, NGOs and startups while maintaining principles of neutrality and decentralization in its infrastructure governance.
