IDunion emerged from the "SSI für Deutschland" consortium in 2020 as a decentralized identity network initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. The project implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles through a distributed network architecture based on open standards and open-source technology. Key technical features include:
W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs)
Verifiable Credentials
In July 2022, IDunion was formally established as a European Cooperative Society (SCE) to serve as the governing authority for the network's productive applications. The cooperative structure includes major European institutions and companies, with initial participation from:
Bundesdruckerei GmbH, esatus AG, Main Incubator GmbH, Robert Bosch GmbH, Deutsche Bahn AG, Commerzbank AG, and Deutsche Telekom AG among others
The project has evolved to align with eIDAS 2.0
regulations and participates in broader European digital identity initiatives, including the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI) and major pilot projects like the European Wallet Consortium. The network began with 8 nodes in its test phase and expanded to 15 decentralized nodes, demonstrating its commitment to building a distributed trust infrastructure for digital identities across Europe.
