OwnYourData is a decentralized identity and data management project that implements a self-sustained environment for managing Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). The project's core technical component is the did:oyd method, which cryptographically links identifiers to DID Documents through a provenance trail maintained in a public log system. This approach differs from blockchain-based DID methods by avoiding distributed ledger dependencies while maintaining security through cryptographic proofs.
The project implements several key technical features:
W3C DID specificationED25519 cryptographic keysNotable implementations and adoption include collaboration with the European Union's EBSI initiative through DID Rotation functionality, allowing seamless transition between did:oyd and did:ebsi. The project has received funding from multiple European Union programs including Horizon 2020 through the NGI TRUSTCHAIN and NGI ONTOCHAIN programs, as well as support from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology. Development partners include the Institute of Software Technology & Interactive Systems at TU Wien and the Human Colossus Foundation.
