Summary

WaltID is an open-source digital identity infrastructure provider launched in 2021 that enables developers to build Self-Sovereign Identity solutions and identity wallets. The platform implements core W3C DID and Verifiable Credentials standards while supporting multiple credential formats including W3C VCs, ISO/IEC 18013-5 mDL/mdocs, and SD-JWTs.

The infrastructure consists of three main components:

  • Issuer API/SDKs for creating and issuing digital credentials
  • Verifier API/SDKs for requesting and verifying credentials
  • Wallet API/SDKs for managing digital identity wallets and credentials

The platform emphasizes interoperability through support for multiple identity ecosystems and protocols including:

  • OpenID Connect standards (OIDC4VC, SIOP)
  • Key management with various signature suites
  • Selective disclosure capabilities via mono-claim credentials and zero-knowledge proofs
  • Integration with traditional identity systems like IAM and IDV providers

WaltID has gained significant adoption particularly in Europe, where it works closely with the European Union on eIDAS2 compliance and the EU Blockchain Service Infrastructure. The platform is used by thousands of developers across governments, enterprises and startups. Notable implementations include projects with the Croatian Agency of Science, Luxembourg Institute of Technology, and various European government agencies.
