To function within an SSI ecosystem and conform to all its principles by extending the SIP protocol to accommodate identified communications and by linking governance-as-code to the implementation to ensure the rules (as much as possible) are enforced in the source code.
Summary
Source

SSIComms is a technical project that integrates Self-Sovereign Identity capabilities into internet communications by combining SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) with DIDComm messaging. The core implementation, SSI-Call, is built on top of the SYLK Suite communications framework and enables users to exchange verified identity information during real-time communication sessions.

The system utilizes several key technical standards and protocols:

  • W3C Verifiable Credentials for identity attestations
  • DIDComm for secure messaging between parties
  • SIP for managing communication sessions
  • Out-of-band DIDComm messages for credential exchange

Developed through a collaboration between Bloqzone, Animo.id, and AG-projects with funding from the NGI eSSIF-Lab program, SSIComms received a €155,000 grant from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research program. The project is open-source and implements a modular architecture that allows developers to integrate their own SSI wallets with the enhanced SYLK Suite React Native client. Key features include:

  • Secure identity verification before and during sessions
  • Peer-to-peer credential verification
  • Support for payment token exchange during active sessions
  • Integration with existing W3C DID infrastructure

Notable implementations include the SSI-Call mobile application which demonstrates the practical application of combining identity and communications protocols in a user-friendly interface.

SSI-Call uses a SIP client to communicate over SIP and to transport out-of-band DIDComm messages, an SSI wallet to host W3C Verifiable credentials, and DIDComm to exchange them between parties.
