Summary

Zzeung is a blockchain-based digital identity authentication service launched in 2020 by ICONLOOP (now Parameta) in South Korea. The platform implements W3C DID standards to enable Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) through its underlying MyID platform technology. Users can store authenticated credentials on their mobile devices and selectively share required information with service providers.

The service supports several key authentication use cases including:

  • Real-name verification for remote bank account opening
  • Driver's license verification for rental car services
  • COVID-19 vaccination status verification
  • Digital certificate management
  • QR-based check-in systems

Zzeung has received significant government and institutional backing, including designation as an "Innovative Financial Service" by the Financial Services Commission of South Korea. Notable implementations include:

  • Integration with Shinhan Bank and NH Bank for financial KYC
  • Deployment by Jeju Island for COVID-19 contact tracing
  • Use by Gangwon Province for their "Health Up" chronic disease management platform
  • Implementation at POSCO's startup space for access control and visitor management

The platform leverages MyID Alliance, a consortium of 86 member organizations across finance, fintech, e-commerce and healthcare sectors, to expand its digital identity ecosystem. The technical architecture stores all personal information in encrypted form on users' devices, with blockchain used to verify data integrity and prevent forgery, aligning with core SSI principles of user control and privacy.
