Summary
Source

The Sphereon Wallet is an open-source Self-Sovereign Identity wallet launched in 2023 that implements multiple digital identity standards and protocols. Built around W3C Decentralized Identifiers and W3C Verifiable Credentials, the wallet enables users to receive, store, and present digital credentials while maintaining full control over their personal data. The wallet supports key technical standards including OpenID Connect, OpenID for Verifiable Credential Issuance (OID4VCI), OpenID for Verifiable Presentations (OID4VP), and DIDComm messaging v2.

Notable technical features include:

  • Support for multiple DID methods including did:ion, did:jwk, did:key, did:web, did:ethr
  • Integration with Microsoft Entra Verified ID and Sphereon VDX Platform
  • Multi-persona capability allowing creation of multiple identities
  • Local secure storage with mnemonic seed and key derivation backup
  • Implementation of DIF Presentation Exchange and DIF Well Known DID Configuration

The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research program through the ESSIF-Lab Project and has developed an eIDAS Bridge component that connects the European Trust Infrastructure to the SSI ecosystem. This enables W3C Verifiable Credentials to be signed with Qualified Electronic Certificates (QEC), giving them full legal weight under eIDAS regulations. The wallet is available for free on mobile app stores and its code is open-source under the Apache 2.0 license.
