Summary

SmartResume is a hybrid platform launched in 2021 that combines traditional technologies with a permissioned blockchain to create verifiable digital credentials and certified resumes. The platform implements the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model and supports the creation of Learning and Employment Records (LERs) through integration with various credential standards including Open Badges and Comprehensive Learner Record specifications.

The technical architecture consists of:

  • A permissioned blockchain for creating tamper-proof audit trails of verified credentials
  • Traditional databases for high-performance operations like job searching and candidate matching
  • Credential management tools that allow users to store and share their verified credentials
  • Integration with 1EdTech standards for credential interoperability
  • Blind resume functionality that anonymizes candidate information to reduce hiring bias

Notable adoption includes partnerships with major educational institutions like University of Arkansas System, Arkansas State University System, and Junior Achievement USA. The platform has expanded its reach through integrations with credential providers like Canvas Credentials, RANDA Solutions, and the Learning Economy Foundation. In 2023, SmartResume received certification from Digital Promise for its inclusive design approach to Learning and Employment Records.

The platform serves three main user groups:

  • Educational institutions and workforce development organizations that issue verified credentials
  • Job seekers who can create verified digital resumes
  • Employers who can access a marketplace of pre-verified candidate credentials

Key technical features include:

  • Support for W3C DID protocols
  • Implementation of Open Badges 2.0/3.0 standards
  • Integration with Comprehensive Learner Record specifications
  • Blockchain-based verification system
  • API-based credential exchange capabilities

Tech Stack Self Description

The SmartResume platform is a hybrid platform that includes a web-based interface, traditional technologies, and a permissioned blockchain ledger. From a user perspective, all of these components are seamless. People maneuver through the platform based on their roles, such as employers, educational institutions, workforce skill certifiers, and individuals. Behind the user interface, iDatafy chose a hybrid solution to take advantage of the features for which blockchain technologies and traditional technologies are best suited. Blockchain technology was selected to create a tamper-proof audit trail of verified credentials in a multi-party environment. Traditional databases were selected for high performance and scalability processes, such as searching for jobs and job candidates, enhancing SmartResumes with supplemental information, mapping credentials to Standard Occupation Codes, and protecting personal information.
