PosteID

PosteID is a digital identity solution developed by Poste Italiane that implements Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) functionality built on top of Ethereum blockchain technology. The solution serves as both an eIDAS-compliant digital identity provider and a SPID (Italian Public Digital Identity System) provider.

The platform utilizes several key technical components:

• W3C DID and Verifiable Credentials standards for identity management
• Integration with the Italian Blockchain Services Infrastructure (IBSI) ecosystem
• Alignment with European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) specifications
• A mobile wallet application available for iOS and Android that supports:
  • NFC-based document verification
  • Biometric authentication (Touch ID/Face ID)
  • QR code-based authentication
  • Offline PIN generation

Notable implementations and adoption include:

• Integration with over 3,800 Poste Italiane offices for in-person identity verification
• Cross-border payments pilot as part of the NOBID consortium for the European Commission's EU Digital Identity Wallet program
• Participation in the IBSI network for interoperability with other Italian digital identity services
• Support for both individual and professional identity use cases

The project represents a significant step in Italy's digital identity infrastructure, combining traditional identity verification through Poste Italiane's physical presence with modern SSI and blockchain technology to enable secure, user-controlled digital identity management.
