Alastria ID is a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) implementation developed by the Alastria Consortium in Spain. The system is built on the Alastria permissioned blockchain networks and follows the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model standard. Launched in 2020, it provides a framework for digital identity management that enables users to control their personal data through a mobile wallet application while interacting with various services.

The technical architecture consists of three main components:

  • Identity Manager Contracts for managing access tokens and identity creation
  • Registry Contracts for handling credentials, presentations, and public keys
  • Smart Contract Libraries for managing EIDAS levels of assurance

Notable implementations and adoption include:

  • Integration with commercial products by Validated ID, Kay Id and Vottun
  • Adoption by the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) project
  • Standardization through the Spanish UNE 71307-1 standard and consideration by CEN/CENELEC for European standards

The system operates on both the Red T network (based on Quorum) and Red B network (using Hyperledger Besu), providing flexibility for different use cases while maintaining alignment with GDPR requirements and European digital identity regulations. The project emphasizes privacy by storing sensitive data off-chain and using blockchain only for verification and credential status tracking.
