Mobile ID is a digital identity initiative launched in 2021 by the Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) that implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles through blockchain technology. The system uses the OmniOne platform developed by RAON and follows the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model standard to enable secure digital versions of official identification documents.

DID implementation for decentralized identity verificationInitially launched for public officials in January 2021, Mobile ID has seen significant adoption with >1,995 IDs issued across 9 government departments in its first phase. The system is being progressively expanded to cover over 200,000 government officials, with plans to eventually support over 960,000 public officials including teachers and central government employees. The Korean government is also expanding the platform to support additional credentials like driver's licenses and disability IDs as part of its broader digital identity infrastructure modernization efforts.
