The Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) is a global nonprofit consortium launched in 2018 to develop standards and infrastructure for blockchain technology in the mobility sector. The organization brings together major automakers, technology companies, and other stakeholders to create interoperable standards for vehicle identity, supply chain tracking, and mobility services.

MOBI implements key technical standards including the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model and W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) to enable self-sovereign identity and trusted data exchange. The consortium has developed several notable technical specifications including the MOBI Vehicle Identity (VID) standard, Battery Birth Certificate, and Battery State of Health standards. Their infrastructure includes the Integrated Trust Network (ITN) and Citopia marketplace platform which enable privacy-preserving data sharing and transactions.

The organization has achieved significant industry adoption, with members including BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Renault, and many other major automotive and technology companies. Notable implementations include:

  • A vehicle emissions monitoring pilot with the European Commission in 2021
  • A Transit IDEA-funded Citopia MaaS pilot in 2022-23
  • Collaboration with the Global Battery Alliance and other consortia on battery passport standards

The consortium continues to expand its work on standards for electric vehicle integration, autonomous vehicles, and mobility-as-a-service applications while maintaining its focus on interoperability and data privacy through Web3 technologies.
