Citopia is a member-owned and operated federated network of nodes creating a cross-industry, decentralized, interoperable Web3 marketplace.
Summary
Source

Citopia is a decentralized marketplace infrastructure launched in 2019 by the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) consortium to enable cross-industry interoperability and trusted transactions. The platform leverages Self-Sovereign Digital Twins™ and implements key digital identity standards including W3C Verifiable Credentials and W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) to facilitate privacy-preserving data exchange and credential verification. The system operates through a federated network of nodes owned and operated by consortium members, with no central controlling entity.

The technical architecture combines several key components:

  • Citopia Passport - A standards-based digital identity application that enables:
    • Selective disclosure of credentials
    • Integration with legacy systems
    • Privacy-compliant data sharing
  • Integrated Trust Network (ITN) - A protocol-agnostic network that:
    • Serves as a DID registry
    • Anchors identifiers on multiple blockchains
    • Validates credential authenticity

Notable implementations include collaborations with the European Commission on vehicle emissions self-reporting and the development of a Global Battery Passport System. The platform has gained traction among major automotive manufacturers, with members including BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, and Groupe Renault. Citopia requires MOBI membership to operate a node and emphasizes decentralized governance through a "1 node = 1 vote" model for network decisions.

Tech Stack Self Description

Citopia is a new kind of marketplace, owned and operated by a federated network of node operators. Each operator can build and manage applications (web services) on Citopia for seamless onboarding, search, discovery, and coordination — collectively forming a cross-industry, decentralized, and interoperable Web3 marketplace of offerings. Citopia is designed to overcome the challenges associated with centralized platforms, harnessing W3C self-sovereign identity standards (Citopia Self-Sovereign Digital Twins™) and zero knowledge proofs to improve users’ data privacy and autonomy while enhancing cross-industry interoperability.
