Summary

Farmer Connect is a Swiss-based technology company launched in 2019 that provides end-to-end traceability solutions for agricultural supply chains, with a particular focus on coffee and cocoa. The platform leverages several key technologies including IBM Blockchain Transparent Supply for traceability, Self-Sovereign Identity for digital farmer identities, and Microsoft Azure for cloud infrastructure.

The platform's core components include FarmerID, a digital wallet solution based on Self-Sovereign Identity that allows farmers to manage their digital identity and transaction records, and ConnectHub, a portal for managing supply chain data and traceability. The system utilizes Hyperledger Fabric as its underlying blockchain infrastructure through the IBM partnership, while integrating with Trinsic's platform for identity management. Notable technical features include:

  • Blockchain-backed traceability using GS1 standard data formats
  • Digital farmer credentials through SSI protocols
  • Integration capabilities with enterprise systems via APIs
  • Geolocation tracking and verification for regulatory compliance
  • Offline transaction support for remote areas

The platform has gained traction with several major industry partners including Beyers Koffie, The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, JDE, and The J.M. Smucker Company. In 2024, Farmer Connect expanded its focus to help companies comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation by providing tools for supply chain verification and reporting. The company also established a research partnership with the London School of Economics to study the impact of digital traceability solutions on farmer livelihoods.

Tech Stack Self Description
Source
An important technology behind our solutions is IBM’s Blockchain Transparent Supply platform, which we have enhanced with additional customizations for the food and beverage supply chains. Other technologies include scalable cloud services for secure hosting & storage (Microsoft Azure), business intelligence software for customized reports (PowerBI), and self-sovereign identity for storing & managing personal identifiable information (e.g., producer data) with the help of Trinsic’s platform.
