The Digital Immunization Passport (DIP) is a decentralized digital health credentials project developed by OwnYourData and the Human Colossus Foundation with funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 program. Launched in 2021, the project implements an end-to-end workflow for managing vaccination and immunization information using Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) principles.
The technical architecture consists of three core components: Semantic Containers for data harmonization, OwnYourData Data Vault for personal data storage, and a Trusted Digital Assistant (TDA) for secure communications. The system uses DID Auth
for authentication between parties, leveraging W3C Verifiable Credentials
and the Overlays Capture Architecture (OCA) for semantic data harmonization. A key technical feature is the use of pairwise DIDs for each interaction to prevent correlation attacks while maintaining secure communication channels.
The project has demonstrated real-world implementations for Yellow Fever and Tick-borne encephalitis vaccination records. It has gained notable recognition through its integration with the Linux Foundation Public Health and the Good Health Pass Collaborative, where its OCA approach was recommended in the GHP Interoperability Blueprint published ahead of the G7 summit in 2021. The project has also received support from major pharmaceutical companies and humanitarian sector organizations, and is being integrated with the IDunion project in Germany to expand its implementation scope.
