The Dynamic Traveler Profile Generation Specification is a standardized framework for creating and managing digital travel profiles in a decentralized manner. Published in June 2023 by the Identity Foundation, this specification enables travelers to maintain control over their personal data while allowing travel providers to request and verify necessary information.

The standard implements decentralized identity principles to give travelers sovereignty over their profile data, including personal information, preferences, and credentials. Key features include:

  • Self-hosted profiles that travelers can store with their preferred providers
  • Cryptographic verification of profile data
  • Dynamic updates that propagate automatically to authorized providers
  • Modular composition allowing for flexible implementation
  • Selective disclosure capabilities for privacy protection

The system operates through four main processes:

  1. Travel provider initiates a profile request
  2. Traveler provides consent
  3. Digital wallet generates and presents profile
  4. Provider verifies the data authenticity

Technical Specifications:

  • Uses JSON-LD for data formatting
  • Implements W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs)
  • Supports Verifiable Credentials standard
  • Utilizes Ed25519Signature2018 for cryptographic proofs

Key Components:

  • Profile Categories:
    • Personal Identification
    • Contact Information
    • Travel Documents
    • Payment Information
    • Travel Preferences
    • Health Information

Security Considerations:

  • Encryption controlled by travelers
  • Granular consent management
  • Cryptographic verification of credentials
  • Selective disclosure protocols

Implementation Requirements:

  • Support for DID resolution
  • JSON-LD processing capabilities
  • Verifiable Credentials handling
  • Implementation of standardized travel context tags

Interoperability Features:

  • Standardized profile request structure
  • Common data format specifications
  • Universal travel context tagging
  • Cross-provider compatibility

The specification is currently in its first major release (v1.0) and is being developed as an open-source initiative to encourage industry-wide adoption.

Example implementations include travel management systems, airline booking platforms, and hotel reservation systems that need to handle traveler profiles securely and efficiently.
