The Digital Address Protocol is a specialized identity protocol developed by the Accountable Digital Identity Association (ADIA) for creating and managing unique digital identifiers within a trusted ecosystem. This protocol enables secure user onboarding and identity verification through certified Digital Address Issuers.

The protocol facilitates the creation of Digital Addresses - special ADIA identifiers issued to individuals after completing Know Your Customer (KYC) processes. It operates through a network of trusted agents and directories to maintain identity integrity and privacy.

Key features include:

  • Unique identifier creation for users and entities
  • Trust anchor verification through the ADIA Global Directory
  • Agent-based architecture with multiple specialized roles
  • Privacy-preserving directories that maintain hashed attributes
  • Standardized message formats using JSON payloads

Purpose and Scope:

  • Creates and manages unique digital identifiers within the ADIA ecosystem
  • Enables secure user onboarding and identity verification
  • Facilitates communication between different system agents
  • Maintains identity integrity through trust anchors

Technical Specifications:

  • Uses DIDComm-based messaging protocols
  • Implements JSON message formats with standardized attributes
  • Supports multiple protocol commands:
    • create-digital-address
    • verify-user
    • revoke-digital-address
    • resolve-digital-address
    • provision-agent

Implementation Requirements:

  • Must be implemented by:
    • ARD Agent
    • DAS Agent
    • Issuer Agent
    • SP Agent
    • Cloud Agent

Security Considerations:

  • Requires certified Digital Address Issuers
  • Implements trust anchor verification
  • Uses hashed attributes for privacy preservation
  • Maintains secure agent-to-agent communications

Interoperability Features:

  • Supports integration with existing Aries protocols
  • Uses standardized message formats
  • Implements common directory protocols
  • Enables cross-entity communication

The protocol is actively maintained by the ADIA and continues to evolve with new security and functionality requirements.
