TRADE (TRustworthy Autonomous Driving by DEcentralized Authentication and Authorization) is a research project focused on developing a secure and scalable decentralized identity management solution for autonomous driving systems. Launched in 2021 with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the project is led by Filancore GmbH in partnership with ETO GRUPPE and the Technical University of Ingolstadt.

The project implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles using the IOTA Distributed Ledger Technology to create an identity layer for Automotive Cyber Systems (ACS). Key technical components include Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials for:

  • Authentication and authorization of vehicles, sensors and infrastructure
  • Secure vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication
  • Over-the-air firmware updates
  • Anti-counterfeiting verification of automotive components

The initiative represents a significant technical collaboration between industry and academia, with a total budget of 1.59 million euros. ETO GRUPPE is developing IOTA-enabled control units for real-world testing, while the Technical University of Ingolstadt researches Decentralized Web of Trust scenarios and conducts security testing through their automotive security laboratory. The project aims to demonstrate how decentralized identity technology can enable secure, interoperable communication across heterogeneous automotive systems while maintaining stakeholder sovereignty over data and access control.
