Summary
Source

Status is a decentralized platform combining a privacy-focused messenger, cryptocurrency wallet, and Web3 browser launched in February 2020. The platform implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles through its integration of ERC-725 and ERC-735 identity standards on Ethereum.

The platform's technical architecture utilizes the Double Ratchet protocol and X3DH based prekeys for end-to-end encryption, with cryptographic primitives including Curve25519, AES-256-GCM, and SECP256K1. For decentralized storage and communication, Status employs Swarm and has transitioned from Whisper to Waku protocol for improved scalability and spam resistance. Key features include:

  • Sovereign Key Management: Users maintain full control of their private keys and recovery phrases, with support for HD wallet derivation and key export
  • Privacy-Preserving Communication: Implementation of metadata-private messaging using end-to-end encryption with perfect forward secrecy
  • Identity Framework: Support for ERC-725/735 standards enabling self-sovereign identity claims and key management
  • Multi-Chain Support: Wallet functionality across Ethereum mainnet, Arbitrum, and Optimism networks

Notable partnerships include collaborations with UNICEF, DAOstack, SuperRare, Kyber Network, and MakerDAO. The platform has seen adoption primarily in the Web3 and cryptocurrency communities, serving as both a communication tool and gateway to decentralized applications.

The end-to-end encryption is implented using Double Ratchet protocol and X3DH based prekeys. The cryptographic primitives include Curve25519, AES-256-GCM, KECCAK-256, SECP256K1, ECDSA, ECIES and AES-256-CTR with HMAC-SHA-256 [55]. Status uses Swarm for decentralized storage and Whisper for peer-to-peer communication. It has recently switched to Waku for peer-to-peer communication for better scalability, spam-resistance and support for libp2p.
