Service NSW Digital ID is a decentralized digital identity system launched in 2023 by the New South Wales Government in partnership with MATTR and BRYK Group. The system implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles by allowing users to store their credentials locally on their devices through a Digital Wallet integrated into the Service NSW app. It utilizes W3C Verifiable Credentials standards and includes biometric verification through FaceTec's face verification technology.

The technical implementation includes:

  • Decentralized storage of credentials on user devices
  • Integration with the Document Verification Service (DVS) for identity document validation
  • Support for selective disclosure of personal information
  • Compliance with the DTA's Trusted Digital Identity Framework
  • Implementation of multiple security measures:
    • Privacy Impact Assessments
    • Fraud Risk Assessments
    • Security Risk Assessments
    • NSW AI Assurance Framework

The system is being piloted for several use cases including:

  • Working with Children Check verification
  • Age verification for online alcohol purchases
  • Digital driver's license verification
  • Professional credentials verification

While still in beta testing phase as of 2024, the project represents one of only 11 digital identity programs operating at scale globally. Initial pilot programs have reported over 90% customer satisfaction rates, though participation has been limited with only 36 users in early trials. The system aims to reduce the oversharing of personal information while maintaining compatibility with both government and private sector services.
