Summary

Schüler-Wallet is a digital identity project focused on implementing Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) solutions in the German education sector. Launched in April 2021 as part of the IDunion consortium, the project aims to develop a framework for digital credentials and identity management specifically tailored for schools.

The technical implementation is based on the Trust over IP (ToIP) model and utilizes several key standards including W3C Verifiable Credentials, Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), and the DIDComm messaging protocol. The project operates on the IDunion network, which provides a decentralized infrastructure compliant with European regulations like GDPR and eIDAS. Key features include:

  • Digital issuance and verification of school credentials
  • Secure storage of educational certificates
  • Selective disclosure capabilities for personal data
  • Integration with existing school management systems

The project has established partnerships with several educational institutions, including the Rackow Schools in Berlin and Frankfurt, and collaborates with national and international networks like the Digital Credentials Consortium and EBSI (European Blockchain Services Infrastructure). A notable implementation includes the development of blockchain-based digital school certificates in Berlin, planned for rollout in 2022 through collaboration with the IT-Dienstleistungszentrum Berlin and local education authorities.

Tech Stack Self Description
Source
The IDunion network is based on the Trust over IP (ToIP) model, which divides the components into four successive layers. The first layer is the IDunion network or similar networks. The second layer deals with the communication between the individual agents. Together these two layers form the technical trust.
