Summary

OrgBook BC is a public digital directory service launched in 2019 by the Government of British Columbia that provides verified information about organizations registered in BC using decentralized identity technology. The service is powered by Aries Verifiable Credential Registry (VCR), Aries Cloud Agent Python (ACA-Py), and Hyperledger Indy to manage digital credentials.

The platform currently holds over 4 million digital credentials and provides verified information on organizations, searchable by name, business number, or BC Registries ID. It implements several key technical standards including W3C Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials to enable secure and verifiable data sharing. The system uses the BC Wallet smartphone app as a digital credential holder that allows organizations to receive, store and present digital credentials.

Key technical features include:

  • Integration with Hyperledger Aries and Hyperledger Indy frameworks
  • Open API for third-party system integration
  • Multi-tenant architecture supporting separate secure storage
  • Support for verifiable credentials issuance and verification
  • Real-time updates from the BC Registry

The project represents one of the first production implementations of Self-Sovereign Identity technology by a government agency in North America. It was developed as part of the Verifiable Organizations Network (VON) initiative in collaboration between the governments of British Columbia, Ontario and Canada to streamline business registration and credential verification processes across jurisdictions.
