Nym Credentials is a privacy-focused digital identity system launched in 2023 by Nym Technologies SA. The system extends the Coconut anonymous credential cryptosystem to enable decentralized credential issuance with enhanced privacy features through zero-knowledge proofs.
The core technical implementation includes several key privacy-preserving features:
Nyx blockchain
for validator-based credential issuanceThe project has received funding through the European Commission's Next Generation Internet programme via the NLnet Foundation. Its first implementation is providing anonymous access credentials for the Nym mixnet, with planned expansions into:
- Privacy-preserving KYC processes
- E-cash payment systems
- General-purpose single sign-on solutions
The system aims to enable Self-Sovereign Identity while maintaining strong privacy guarantees through its decentralized architecture and cryptographic foundations. Rather than relying on centralized identity providers, Nym Credentials allows users to selectively disclose only necessary identity attributes while keeping other information private through zero-knowledge proofs.
