The National Digital ID (NDID) Platform is Thailand's national digital identity infrastructure launched in 2020. Built using blockchain technology, it enables secure digital identity verification and data exchange between authorized institutions while giving users control over their personal information.
The platform utilizes Tendermint consensus protocol and consists of three main technical components: a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) layer for data synchronization, an API layer for external applications, and a P2P Communication Channel using ZeroMQ for private data exchange between nodes. The system implements a "data trustee" model where users can authorize specific institutions (typically banks or credit bureaus) to store and share their verified identity data through the NDID Platform. Key features include facial recognition verification, blockchain-based validation, and self-sovereign identity management capabilities.
Notable adoption includes integration with major Thai financial institutions and the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA). The platform has enabled various use cases including digital bank account opening, loan applications, and e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) processes. In 2020, Advanced Info Service (AIS) became the first telecom provider to offer NDID verification services through their physical stores nationwide, demonstrating the platform's expansion beyond the financial sector into broader commercial applications.
