Summary

Initial is a blockchain-based mobile identification system launched in 2020 by NH Nonghyup Bank in South Korea, developed in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and LG Uplus. The system implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles through Decentralized Identifier (DID) technology, allowing users to maintain control over their personal information while providing secure authentication. It represents the first commercial application of distributed identity technology developed by the Initial DID Association, an identity consortium governed by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency.

The platform's core features include:

  • Mobile employee ID cards for building access and attendance tracking
  • Secure authentication through blockchain-based verification
  • Personal data protection through distributed ledger technology
  • Integration with payment functionality for cafeteria purchases and appointments

The system has seen notable adoption within NH Nonghyup Bank, where it was initially tested with 20 employees at their Digital Innovation Campus. The Initial DID Association includes major Korean institutions such as:

  • LG, SK Telecom, and Samsung Electronics
  • Financial institutions like Shinhan Bank, KEB Hana Bank, and Woori Bank
  • Technology companies like CJ Olive Networks and Koscom
