The International Air Transport Association (IATA) developed IATA Travel Pass in 2021 as a mobile application to help manage COVID-19 health credentials for international travel. Built on Self-Sovereign Identity principles using Sovrin blockchain technology and Evernym's technical infrastructure, the app allows travelers to store and share verified COVID-19 test results and vaccination certificates while maintaining control of their personal data.
The system consists of four key interoperable modules:
Notable adoption included trials with major carriers like Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Copa Airlines. The government of Panama became the first nation to officially accept the Travel Pass in April 2021. While the app leveraged blockchain for decentralization, research by Citizen Lab found that most testing facilities relied on Evernym's centralized infrastructure, potentially limiting some benefits of the distributed architecture. The IATA Travel Pass was eventually decommissioned after serving its purpose during the peak pandemic period.
