Summary

Hedera Guardian is an open-source platform that enables the creation and tracking of digital environmental assets using distributed ledger technology. The platform implements the W3C Verifiable Credentials standard and leverages both the Hedera Consensus Service (HCS) and Hedera Token Service (HTS) to create verifiable provenance chains for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) assets.

The platform's core technical components include a Policy Workflow Engine that manages the state of required policy actions and information flow, utilizing W3C DIDs, Verifiable Credentials, and Verifiable Presentations to capture digitally signed documents stored on IPFS. The system creates auditable trails by:

  • Storing provenance chain artifacts on IPFS
  • Using HCS to create immutable records of IPFS-stored artifacts
  • Implementing HTS to mint corresponding fungible or non-fungible tokens
  • Creating verifiable links between tokens and Measurement, Reporting & Verification (MRV) data

Notable collaborators and contributors to the project include DOVU, Rearden Digital Assets, Swirlds Labs, HBAR Foundation, Envision Blockchain, and several other organizations in the sustainability space. The platform is particularly focused on enabling transparent carbon markets and environmental asset trading by providing auditable, traceable records that document the emission process and lifecycle of digital environmental tokens.
