On a mission to make health data easy to share when you need to, and impossible to hack when you don’t.
Summary

HealthKERI is a healthcare-focused digital identity and security project launched in 2023 that implements the Key Event Receipt Infrastructure (KERI) protocol to secure health data exchanges. The project utilizes post-quantum secure cryptography and digital signatures to create a zero-trust verification system for healthcare data transactions. At its core, HealthKERI implements the "Five Rights of Secure Health Data" framework which verifies:

  • Right Data: Authenticity and integrity verification
  • Right Source: Organization validation
  • Right Role: User/system authorization
  • Right Purpose: Usage validation
  • Right Route: Secure transmission path validation

The technical implementation leverages several key features:

  • Integration with FHIR standards for healthcare interoperability
  • Channel-agnostic verification that works across different communication methods
  • End-verifiable authentication without relying on third-party certificate authorities
  • Support for API calls and VPN endpoint security
  • Compatibility with existing healthcare systems through lightweight integration

Notable partnerships and adoption include membership in DirectTrust and Civitas Networks for Health, two major healthcare information exchange organizations. The project's technical foundation builds on work done by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), which has implemented KERI in production systems. The project is led by Dr. Samuel Smith, the original inventor of the KERI protocol, along with other digital identity experts from the Trust Over IP Foundation.

Inspired by the ever-growing need for data security and integrity, we harness the power of the open-source Key Event Receipt Infrastructure (KERI) protocol. This means we build a solid foundation for safeguarding your system’s health data throughout its lifecycle. We aim to ensure that it remains fraud-proof, auditable, and secure.
