Summary
Source

eZug is a digital identity platform launched by the City of Zug in Switzerland that enables citizens to obtain verified digital identities and access government services. Initially developed using Ethereum blockchain technology in partnership with ConsenSys-uPort in 2017, the platform has evolved into a comprehensive smart government solution that allows citizens to manage official documents and interact with municipal services digitally.

The system's technical architecture combines blockchain-based verification with traditional authentication methods through ZUGLOGIN, the canton's official identity system. Key features include:

  • Secure document storage in a protected area on users' smartphones
  • Digital signatures through integration with Skribble
  • Selective disclosure of personal data when interacting with services
  • QR code-based authentication for accessing web portals and services

Notable implementations include:

  • Digital verification for debt collection registers
  • E-voting pilot programs
  • Library access management
  • Bicycle sharing services
  • Municipal parking management

The platform demonstrates significant adoption within the City of Zug, with the initial blockchain-based pilot registering over 350 citizens. While the original Ethereum-based implementation has been completed, the system maintains blockchain verification capabilities in its product roadmap for future applications like voting. The project represents one of the first government-issued self-sovereign identity implementations and continues to expand its service offerings across the Canton of Zug.
