Summary

Enmeshed is an open-source digital identity and secure data exchange platform launched in 2021 by j&s-soft GmbH. The platform implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles through a combination of end-to-end encryption and a centralized backbone architecture that enables secure communication between identities while maintaining user privacy through Zero Knowledge Proof technology.

The technical implementation centers around the platform's own did:e method for Decentralized Identifiers and integration with the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model. Key security features include:

  • End-to-end encryption using XChaCha-Poly1305 (256-bit)
  • Digital signatures via ECDSA Ed25519
  • Key exchange through ECDH X25519
  • Cross-device synchronization with device-specific signing keys
  • Integration with eIDAS 2.0 standards for European compliance

Notable adoption has come primarily in the education sector, with implementations at several German universities and institutions including the SAP UCC Magdeburg and the Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung. The platform operates through three main components: the Enmeshed App for end-users, a central Backbone for message routing and synchronization, and the Enmeshed Connector for organizational integration. While the backbone is centralized, it maintains privacy through zero-knowledge architecture, meaning operators cannot access the encrypted payload data being transmitted between identities.

The communication with the Backbone is encrypted on the http transport layer. This is done by using the transport-layer-security (TLS) standard which is common throughout the Internet. This prevents third parties to access any data communication to and from the Backbone.
