The Digital Farm Wallet is a decentralized digital identity solution launched in January 2023 by Trust Alliance New Zealand (TANZ) in partnership with Indicio and Anonyme Labs. The project implements Self-Sovereign Identity principles to help farmers manage and share agricultural compliance data while maintaining control over their information. The technical infrastructure utilizes verifiable credentials, digital wallets, and decentralized identifiers to enable secure data sharing between farmers, industry organizations, and regulatory bodies.
The system was developed with funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries New Zealand Government through their Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures (SFFF) program. Key features include:
verifiable presentations for stakeholders like regional councils and banksThe pilot phase demonstrated significant adoption with over 200 active participants across farming organizations, regulators, and financial institutions. The project has shown practical benefits in reducing administrative burden - transforming paper documentation that previously required multiple submissions into single verifiable credential presentations. Based on this success, the Digital Farm Wallet is being scaled to cover New Zealand's entire agricultural sector, aiming to streamline compliance processes while enabling farmers to provide trusted proof of sustainable practices to international markets.
