Summary

Cardossier is a decentralized digital platform launched in 2020 that aims to digitize and automate vehicle lifecycle management in Switzerland. Built on Self-Sovereign Identity principles, the platform leverages Hyperledger Indy and Hyperledger Aries protocols to create verifiable digital records of vehicles from first registration to disposal. The technical implementation uses the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model and operates on Adnovum's SB4B (Secure Blockchain for Business) infrastructure.

The platform is operated by a broad consortium including:

  • Government agencies like the Swiss Federal Roads Office and cantonal vehicle registration offices
  • Major automotive companies like AMAG, Emil Frey, and AutoScout24
  • Financial institutions like PostFinance and AXA
  • Academic institutions like the University of Zurich and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences

Notable implementations include:

The electronic temporary traffic permit (eVIV) system used by large garages and road authorities
Integration of Self-Sovereign Identity solutions for vehicle registration processes
Implementation of zero-knowledge proofs for selective data disclosure

The project represents one of Switzerland's first public-private partnerships using blockchain technology and has garnered international attention, including interest from the World Bank. The platform aims to reduce fraud in vehicle trading while enabling more efficient processes through standardized digital workflows and verified vehicle histories.

Tech Stack Self Description
Source
Enabled by means of open and free technologies, provided by the global Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) community, such as Hyperledger Indy und Hyperledger Aries. Certificates for passwordless access, known as “Verifiable Credentials”, are being issued on the world’s first productive SSI network by pionee Sovrin. In the future, additional cardossier service offers on the platform, such as vehicle registration, service entries in the dossiers and insurance certificates, will be linked to those decentralized identities, too.
