BC Wallet is a mobile wallet application developed by the Government of British Columbia that enables users to receive, store and present Verifiable Credentials. The wallet is built on top of Hyperledger Bifold, a mobile wallet framework that uses Aries Framework JavaScript (AFJ) as its verifiable credentials agent.
The wallet implements several key technical standards and protocols including the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model and Hyperledger AnonCreds for privacy-preserving credentials. It integrates with a mediator service based on Aries Cloud Agent Python (ACA-Py) to handle message routing. The system architecture leverages the Trust Over IP framework and uses Hyperledger Indy for the underlying distributed ledger technology.
Key technical features include:
While launched in 2022, BC Wallet remains in limited deployment, primarily used for specific pilot projects like enabling lawyers to access court materials and businesses to manage digital credentials. The project represents one of the first government-issued mobile wallets for verifiable credentials and demonstrates the Government of British Columbia's ongoing leadership in implementing Self-Sovereign Identity solutions.
