Veres One DID Method is a permissionless public ledger system designed specifically for managing Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs). Built by Digital Bazaar, it operates without cryptocurrency or tokens, focusing purely on identity management through a leaderless consensus mechanism.

The system enables individuals, organizations, and devices to create and control their own identifiers without relying on centralized authorities. It is optimized for self-sovereign identity operations and integrates with Verifiable Credentials ecosystems.

Key features include:

  • Permissionless Architecture - Anyone can create and manage DIDs
  • Censorship Resistance through leaderless consensus
  • GDPR Compliance by design
  • High Performance (~200 transactions/second)
  • Non-speculative economic model without cryptocurrency

The method supports two identifier types:

  • did:v1:nym - Cryptonym-based identifiers (hash of public key)
  • did:v1:uuid - UUID-based identifiers for metadata storage

Technical Architecture:

  1. DID Generation:

    • Uses did:v1 method prefix
    • Supports cryptographic and UUID-based identifiers
    • Follows W3C DID Core specification
  2. Authentication & Authorization:

    • Implements Ed25519 Signatures for authentication
    • Uses Linked Data Capabilities for authorization
    • Supports multiple key types and delegation
  3. Core Components:

    • veresOneOperationsService - Creates/updates DIDs
    • veresOneReadService - Resolves DIDs
    • Continuity consensus algorithm
  4. Security Features:

    • Cryptographic Agility for algorithm updates
    • Anti-censorship mechanisms
    • Privacy-preserving design
    • No storage of personal data on-chain
  5. Technology Stack:

    • Built on JSON-LD
    • Uses Web Ledger protocol
    • Implements Linked Data Proofs
    • Supports Ed25519 cryptography

The method emphasizes privacy, security, and scalability while maintaining compliance with data protection regulations. Its architecture enables high throughput without compromising decentralization or security principles.
