The did:cosmos method is a specialized Decentralized Identifier implementation designed for assets on Cosmos-compatible blockchains. As an Interchain Identifier (IID), it focuses specifically on identifying and managing on-chain assets like NFTs, fungible tokens, and other blockchain-native components.

This method enables secure reference to digital assets across the Cosmos ecosystem while providing privacy-preserving mechanisms for linking additional resources and metadata. Unlike some DID methods, did:cosmos is specifically designed for asset identification rather than personal identity management.

Key features include:

  • Blockchain-Specific Routing through the Cosmos Chain Registry
  • Privacy-Preserving Resource Linking via hashgraphs and secure references
  • Flexible Asset Module Support for different token types
  • Cross-Chain Compatibility within the Cosmos ecosystem
  • Standardized Rights Management through executable and accorded rights

The architecture requires three core components:

  • Chain Registry for blockchain routing
  • Namespace Registry for module management
  • Asset Modules for specific token handling

Technical Implementation:

  1. DID Structure:
  • Format: did:cosmos:[version]:[chainspace]:[namespace]:[unique-id]
  • Example: did:cosmos:1:ixo:nft:7Tqg6BwSSWapxgUDm9KKgg
  1. Key Security Features:
  • Uses Secp256k1 cryptography
  • Supports multiple verification methods
  • Implements capability delegation
  • Provides linked resource privacy controls
  1. Core Operations:
  • Create: Asset module registration with unique identifiers
  • Read: Multi-step resolution through registries
  • Update: Controller-authorized document modifications
  • Deactivate: Permanent state change marking as inactive
  1. Technical Standards:
  • Compliant with W3C DID Core
  • Implements JSON-LD contexts
  • Supports Multibase encoding
  • Uses gRPC for communications

The method leverages the Cosmos SDK's proven security model while adding specialized features for asset identification and management.
